Marsel Nilaj është pedagog në Departamentin e Historisë, Fakulteti i Shkencave Shoqërore, Universiteti i Shkodrës “Luigj Gurakuqi” që prej vitit 2012. Ai ka eksperiencë në mësimdhënie dhe kërkim shkencor në fushën e historisë moderne dhe metodologjisë kërkimore dhe është titullar në lëndët:  Metodologji e Kërkimit Historik, Bazat e Etnologjisë, Histori e Antikitetit dhe e mejstes Shqiptare. Ka marrë pjesë në projekte shkencore, konferenca dhe publikime kombëtare e ndërkombëtare. Interesat e tij kërkimore përfshijnë ruajtjen dhe promovimin e trashëgimisë historike përmes edukimit dhe kërkimit shkencor.
